Antitrust: Commission sends Statement of Objections to Amazon for the use of non-public independent seller data and opens second investigation into its e-commerce business practices

The European Commission has informed Amazon of its preliminary view that it has breached EU antitrust rules by distorting competition in online retail markets. The Commission takes issue with Amazon systematically relying on non-public business data of independent sellers who sell on its marketplace, to the benefit of Amazon’s own retail business, which directly competes with those third party sellers. The Commission also opened a second formal antitrust investigation into the possible preferential treatment of Amazon’s own retail offers and those of marketplace sellers that use Amazon’s logistics and delivery services. Mais informações: comunicado de imprensa completo e a conferência de imprensa da Vice-Presidente Executiva Vestager está disponível em EbS.

Speech by President von der Leyen at the EU Ambassadors’ Conference 2020

“The world is a very different place compared to when we met last September. A virus that did not even exist back then has disrupted and dominated your work. You have had to organise deliveries of medical aid, and repatriation flights for stranded Europeans. You supported aid workers, citizens and business people, dealing with lockdowns and travel restrictions. You have been the face of European solidarity and cooperation around the world. And I want to thank you for all these efforts. This work with our partners all around the world – this solidarity and cooperation – is more important today than it has ever been. I say this, because the crisis served as a strong reminder of the need to tackle global challenges together. It also exposed a number of weaknesses in the global system. And it accelerated many structural changes – whether geopolitical, ecological or technological in nature. We cannot turn back the hands of time. The world after Corona will never look like the world we knew before it. But our commitment to our values and to our partners will remain as steadfast as ever. It is about working in our common interest for the common good. There are a number of areas where Europe is already taking the initiative – and will be ready to work closely with the United States and others over the next year. (…) Health, climate, digital, reform of the multilateral rules-based system. These are some of the key areas where I see Europe can take the initiative and offer a positive new agenda with the United States. (…) We have everything at our disposal. A unique single market and social market economy, a position as the world’s first trading superpower and the world’s second currency. (…) Over the next two years, governments around the world will spend around €10 trillion for the recovery. (…) Our choices can shape the economy that the next generation will inherit. For this reason, our recovery plans is called NextGenerationEU. We want to use it not only to recover, but to come out of the crisis with a better economy: greener, more digital, more resilient, fit for the next generation. (…) wherever you are posted, this is a moment for action. It is a moment to reach out, and make clear that Europe is ready to engage.” Leia o discurso complete online.

Union for the Mediterranean Ministers highlight the importance of regional trade in economic recovery

The 42 member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) convened today by videoconference for the 11th Trade Ministerial Conference to launch three new trade and investment initiatives. They also called for the strengthening of trade ties in the Euro-Mediterranean area as a crucial element for the regional economic recovery. The UfM Trade Ministerial Conference stressed the importance of ensuring that Mediterranean partners can take full advantage of opening markets. The newly launched trade and investment initiatives supported by the EU and implemented by partner organisations – the International Trade Centre, the International Labour Organization and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development – will contribute to that aim. Worth a total of €11 million, they will strengthen the impact of trade and investment on job creation in the Southern Mediterranean and encourage inclusive economic development. Circular Plastics Alliance: A step closer to 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics

Today, the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), which gathers 245 public and private actors covering the whole plastics value chains, has delivered its first actions. Those delivered actions pursue the Alliance’s objective: to reach the target of 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics used in products by 2025. They include a work plan on design-for-recycling of plastic products, which lists 19 plastic products that the Alliance will make more recyclable; a report on collected and sorted plastic waste in the EU, presenting the current state of play; and an R&D agenda for circular plastics. The European Commission announced the launch of the Circular Plastics Alliance in December 2018. The launch followed the preliminary assessment of industry voluntary pledges for more recycled plastics. For more information see here.

Boeing WTO case: The EU puts in place countermeasures against U.S. exports

The European Commission’s regulation increasing tariffs on U.S. exports into the EU worth $4 billion was published in the Official Journal of the EU yesterday. The countermeasures have been agreed by EU Member States since the U.S. has not yet provided the basis for a negotiated settlement, which would include an immediate removal of U.S. tariffs on EU exports in the Airbus WTO case. The World Trade Organization (WTO) formally authorised the EU on 26 October to take such countermeasures against illegal U.S. subsidies to aircraft maker Boeing. The measures will take effect as from today. The European Commission stands ready to work with the U.S. to settle this dispute and also to agree on long-term disciplines on aircraft subsidies. You will find more information here.
